Invest in yourself daily/weekly. The season is shorter this year by a whole month. Our kids practice 2x a week. A lot of the top kids in the state practice 3-4 times a week and most of them practice year round. Our club is offering our athletes a chance to come in and get some extra drill time. You can get some one on one time with a coach to refine something that has been giving you problems or work on some stuff that you’re not fully confident with yet.
Everyone wants to be a winner, but not everyone wants to put in the work. Talent will only take a person so far before the playing field levels out and then it comes down to who is putting in the mat time, who is eating healthy, who is putting in roadwork (running). To wrestle at a high level, a certain amount of discipline is required. Some kids have this discipline from an early age. Some kids need to be shown how to be disciplined. The fruits of their labor over time will bring a certain level of satisfaction and accomplishment. The athlete will see that over a period of time how they have improved. Those moments will fuel them to strive for more. To be disciplined on their own.
I heard a coach tell it like this. You go to a job how many hours of the week, 40? That is standard expectation, what most employers think is the minimum work week. Overtime is extra. While working overtime you get 1.5x the money for the work you do on those days. Wrestling the regular practices is your standard work week. Overtime is where you’re going to get paid more. Overtime is where you are going to benefit more. Coming to an extra practice and getting an extra hour of drill time is overtime. Eating healthy is overtime. Going for a run after school is overtime. Watching wrestling videos or working with a parent or sibling is overtime. Asking questions during practice is overtime. You’re going to get more out of your overall performance the more overtime you put in. You get the most back from what you put in.
The wrestling room is now open on Thursdays. I encourage all of our advanced youth to attend this practice. We had a record year last year with 18 kids making it to state. Our club had 2 state champs last year. Lets get more than 2 state champs this year. Lets put in work. The season is shorter this year. We, as coaches, want it for you. But you have to want it.
"There's always ways of motivating yourself to higher levels. Write about it, dream about it. But after that, turn it into action. Don't just dream." - Dan Gable
